Ania & Jon Trash the Dress (Part2) – Edmonton Portrait Photographers

Alright, everyone can stop e-mailing and facebooking us — we’ll post part two of Ania and Jon’s trash the dress at Klondike Days (Capital Ex) in Edmonton!  Ania and Jon looked stunning as the light started to fade on the grounds at Klondike Days.  We took a ride on the ferris wheel, then some photographs in front of it.

As a child, when it became dark outside and the lights on the rides were shining it was a real magical time for me.  My Dad used to time it so we were on the ferris wheel right during the start of the fireworks. Well, having a bride and groom to photograph at this location was just magical for me this year as an adult.

We were about to set ourselves up for some great firework photographs, when we noticed the new event of the year – flow boarding!  We asked Ania and Jon if they minded getting a little wet (we had no towels as we didn’t expect for our session to end up in the water!).  We were so excited when they agreed!

As we were already wet and having fun in the water, we capped off the night in front of City Hall where some really kind workers put off cleaning the pool for us to jump in and get some great photographs.  This fun session made my month!  And now, I’ll stop blabbing and share the second half of my favorites!

Rebecca & Adam’s Wedding Photographs! – Edmonton Wedding Photographers

Rebecca and Adam’s wedding was a day full of fun and beautiful details.  Rebecca was a stunning bride, with a very original dress!  Adam had a great bunch of groomsmen who made the getting ready photos a lot of fun.  The ceremony took place at St. Joseph’s in Edmonton – one of my favorite churches to photograph!  The reception location was the Petroleum Club – absolutely delicious food!  What a great party!  There was much partying and dancing, and always a full dance floor. In the evening the weather became rainy with power outages around the city and leaving the reception there were trees broken down and lying across the road.  None of this effected the great party indoors, and it was top notch!   To Rebecca and Adam: we wish you the best in your married life together!  Lucy and I had a blast photographing your day!

Lynae & Lucas’ Day After Session!

So you may be wondering, “what is a day after session?”.  A day after session is a wedding photography session that doesn’t happen on the wedding day.  Generally couples may choose to do this type of session if their weather was bad on their wedding day and they wanted a few outdoor photographs, or if they simply didn’t have enough photographs from the wedding day or wanted photographs in locations they were unable to use during their wedding day.  This session doesn’t have to literally be the next day after a wedding day at all!  We really love these sessions as time is not an issue, and that allows us to do a lot of fun locations.  In this case, it rained, and was sunny, then sprinkled a bit more… but in the end we were able to get many beautiful photographs in!  I was a guest during Lynae and Lucas’ wedding day and couldn’t get over how beautiful everything looked, so I was super pumped when chosen to do the day after session a few weeks later!

With extreme weather changes, we were constantly on our toes pulling out diffusers then putting them away a few seconds later.  Geek/Photographer info to follow, so skip to the next paragraph if you are not interested :).  What I really love about cloudy/dark weather is the ability to focus in on lighting and create some dramatic photographs.  Here, most important to us is creating ratios on the face (so one half of the face is darker than the other half).  This adds depth to the photographs making them appear more 3D then they would look like if lit from the front.  We use multiple lights for our photography, but if the sun was out, it could be used as the second light.  The thing with a sunny day and the sun being counted as one of your two or three lights, is that you are no longer able to choose your location based on pure beauty of the spot, but have to consider where the sunlight is coming from first, then refine your locations to suit.  Basically, you are choosing spots that work with the current lighting situation you are in, and often that means choosing a spot that is possibly a little less beautiful in person.  If you are out in a location that is really sunny and unable to diffuse the scene, often there are shadows visible under the eyes, nose and chins of everyone you are photographing.  Diffusers are awesome to help block sunlight and allowing you to be the light creator, but there is no diffuser out there able to cover a large group of people, so the locations in the sun are more limited than they are on a cloudy day with our off-camera lights.  So, when you hear a photographer say “wow this is perfect weather!” on your cloudy wedding day, this is why!  It is easier for us to be the artists on cloudy days, and use any spot we want to.  Yay for clouds!

Lynae and I go way back… our parents were friends and her dad used to babysit me when I was tiny!  When my parents travelled to Europe, my brother and I stayed with Lynae’s family and became family for a few months!   This session was loads of fun for me for that reason.  It was like photographing cousins :).   The session took place in Bonnyville, Alberta at Lynae and Lucas’ farm.  I love photographing in rural locations, especially when we can include property or locations that are meaningful to the couple!  Now I’m feeling rather talkative, so I’ll leave you with some of my favorite photographs from the day after session!

Sunshine & Lucian’s Wedding Photographs!

I met up with Sunshine and Lucian in Westaskiwin, Alberta, to photograph their wedding.  They were such a great couple to photograph, and Sunshine looked stunning!  Their ceremony was very touching and full of great emotions.

The formal photographs were done in a nearby park.  One of my favorite things to do with greenery is to stand and pose couples very far from it, then use a 200 mm lens on as low an aperture as possible to blur out the background.  I find doing this really creates a soft look to the photograph, while keeping the subject (bride and groom) super sharp.  This also puts the focus more on the couple than where they are, which is important for portraits (not all, but definitely should happen in some).  I love how natural Sunshine and Lucian were together.  That natural connection really shows in their photos :).

The reception was a blast and the party really joined in on the dancing more than a usual reception.  Even Father Mark was hitting the dance floor!  The photograph of bride and groom in front of the cake are of Lucian standing the groom cake topper up again as he kept falling over.  According to Sunshine, their cats have now eaten the groom cake topper’s hand off. The cake topper couple is no longer together, but the couple you are about to see is going strong!  Thanks for having me share in your day you two!

Here are some of my favorites!
