Welcome Grace Sylvia Savill! – Edmonton Portrait Photographers

If it wasn’t so late already tonight, I’d go back to our 2007 back ups and pull out an engagement photo and wedding photo of Brandi and Martin to share here to show you where it all began :).  We met Brandi and Martin before their wedding day and were so pumped to photograph their maternity session years later!  We didn’t share these before as they were keeping it a secret that they were going to be having a baby …. wait for it…. GIRL!

I have just finished editing these pictures after arriving home from the hospital where Brandi gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Grace Sylvia Savill.  Dad was very proud and caring for Brandi as she recovered.  Nothing is as emotional an experience as witnessing a brand new life come into the world!  A huge congrats, and a welcome to Grace!

Nuance Occasions Decor – Edmonton Wedding Photographers

I am so excited to share these reception detail photographs!  Jolyn from Nuance Occasions asked me to take a few detail photographs for her company of the awesome decor she came up with for her New Year’s Eve wedding at the TransAlta Art Barns in Edmonton.  I was never in a position to have a full hour to photograph details before, and details are some of my favorite things to photograph!  The place looked stunning.  I absolutely loved the feathers, and the white against the black room.

The lighting that the TransAlta Art Barns have is by far better than anything I’ve seen in any other Edmonton venues.  The lighting guru took me upstairs and I walked across a net with fairly large holes, bouncing up and down like a trampoline.  This is the first time I became afraid of heights!  I was able to walk across the glass floor in the CN Tower, but this was more scary than that :).  I laid down on the netting and the first thing I noticed was how the tables and chairs looked like beautiful flowers from far up.  The first purposefully out of focus photograph was taken to bring the viewer’s attention to the shape and colors, not the detail per se.

I loved the feather ideas, and the incorporation of the falling orchids and beautiful crystal pieces.  The place looked modern and chic and simply beautiful.  Jolyn, you did an amazing job!  I’m sure the couple was blown away..

Note to photographers:  If you shoot a gig at the TransAlta Art Barns, I strongly recommend bringing a tripod as well as multiple off-camera flashes for the most beautiful results.

Pohl Family Photo Shoot! – Edmonton Portrait Photographers

We had a great time photographing the Pohl family.  They were a bundle of fun, cracking jokes, teasing each other and that worked out perfectly for us!  In one sequence of four you’ll notice the men walking towards the camera, Dad slipping, and then his son taking this opportunity to… cover him with snow!  This resulted in a son-in law coming to his father-in-law’s defense, resulting in a snow fight!  You can’t stage events like that!

The girls were so pretty, and I love the photos of the four of them!

Every time we photograph a family, we ensure we get pictures of the smaller groupings within in it, and we thought the couples photographs turned out really sweet and showed off the differing personalities of each couple!  Dustin brought a furry hat that he kept threatening to wear for a picture, so we went with it!  We love the resulting photo!

Note to photographers:  When photographing in the snow, do not trust your camera to meter correctly on automatic, or even Av or Tv mode.  The snow, being white is a large reflector, bouncing light around in every direction.  Your camera’s instinct almost in any type of metering mode will be to expose darker (basically turn the scene to a 18% grey tone).  This will result in your snow turning blue or grey in your photograph – which is incorrect (unless that’s what you are going for artistically).  Ensure you are photographing in manual mode only and spot meter on a person’s skin (have the skin fill the full frame of your camera).  Adjust your settings for the skin tone, back up and then incorporate the entire scene keeping those settings.  Shooting in the snow is a little difficult, and if you are unsure, check your histogram frequently to ensure you are getting what you want!

…Off and away to edit some more photographs!

Christine & Andrew’s Wedding Photographs! – Edmonton Wedding Photographers

Christine and Andrew’s wedding took place on October 10th- one of the coldest days of fall ever!  We didn’t let the cold effect the day.  Krister and I had a difficult time choosing just a few photos from this wedding.  We had so much fun and took so many photographs!

Christine got ready at Salon on 6th – surprisingly one of my favorite places!  I say “surprisingly” as it does not go overboard to be trendy, and it is less expensive than most salons.  I have to say though, that every bridal party I have seen get ready there has had awesome hair that stayed in place.  Many hair places don’t do the best makeup ever, but this place has some pros working in that department and I have never been disappointed.  Two of the hair dressers have won awards (1st place and second place) for their creativity in hair design.

The ceremony and reception were at the Royal Glenora.  One thing has to be said, that place serves some awesome food!

Christine and Andrew met each other for the first time in a bowling alley, so we went to Gateway Lanes to take photos of them and their bridal party.  We had a blast there!  The staff at Gateway gave the couple a nice bowling pin as a memento.

We did some outdoor “formal” pictures at the museum.  {note to photographers: We do not recommend using this place usually as it is stuffed with bridal parties and photographers – more than the grounds can handle and more than a photographer can crop out of their images.  Also, our favorite steps at this place are in the worst place possible for lighting.  However, in October on a cloudy day we felt this was the spot to go!  We had the whole place to ourselves.  The bridal party was able to sit in their cars and jump out for a few pictures, then back into the warmth.}

Back at Glenora Andrew changed back into uniform for a couple of photographs before the reception.  The reception was a lot of fun, and half way through we took some pictures in an old telephone booth on the premises.  Here’s a small sample from the day!

Just thought I’d add this in… the decor for the ceremony and reception was done by Dazzle by Dawn.  We loved it!
