Cheerific Calendar – Edmonton Corporate Photographer

Krister and I had a few unique photo sessions this year while we created photographs for Cheerific’s 2010 calendar!  The calendar is hit, and if you want to get your hand on one of them click here!

For photographers: These photographs were taken in a number of photo shoots, not all in one day.  We were surprised how different it was lighting two people doing a lift rather than groups on the same level.  Rather than use our tried and tested lighting system for these photographs, we found we needed double the amount of lighting, one for the top person and one for the bottom.  As you can’t exactly predict where the person on top will end up, the lighting needed to be tweaked very quickly as soon as they were up in the lift.

What was funny while editing these photographs for the calendar was that some of our favorite shots didn’t make the cut!  Cheer is so much about form and position, that the “good” photos were selected based on where the cheerleaders legs, feet, arms were first and foremost.  Photographing for this calendar was a blast, and having a subject full of endless energy was awesome!

Laura & Ed’s Engagement Photographs! – Edmonton Portrait Photographers

Laura and Ed are a super sweet couple, with a love story not many couples have.  The two met in school and began dating when Laura was just 13!  Their relationship has lasted until this day, and this winter Ed proposed on the skating rink at Victoria Park.  Laura is a figure skater, and Ed loves hockey, so they often skate together for fun.  For the proposal Ed had Laura do a spin, and as she came out of it she saw Ed on one knee with ring in hand.  We did a mini recreation of this moment in our photographs :).  These engagement photos were all taken at Victoria Park, and we all got super cold and wet, but we love the meaning the photos hold.

For photographers shooting outdoors in the winter, at some point the focusing on your camera may not work as it begins to get too cold.  We recommend having double the equipment needed, and keeping it in a warm place, ready to replace if necessary.  While not as important for engagement photographs, for wedding photos this is a definite must!  To keep your equipment in the best shape possible, seal it in an air tight container after it has been outdoors in below zero weather, then when you bring it indoors, allow it to sit in the sealed container for a few hours as it adjusts in temperature before you remove your cameras.

Mindy & Jason’s Wedding Photographs! – Edmonton Wedding Photographers

Mindy and Jason… what can I say.  It is almost sad to say goodbye to our 2009 weddings.  This is the second last of them *sniff*.  Mindy and Jason were so fun to photograph.  They were totally fun party people, and I had a great time riding in the limo with the bridal party, stopping around Fort Edmonton Park for photographs and a couple other spots…

The reception was a blast, super funny.  The couple played a wedding game where the table that clinked the glasses to see the bride and groom kiss had to answer trivia about them first.  If they were right the couple would kiss, otherwise the entire table had to do a shot.  I think a couple of tables may have gotten the answers wrong on purpose.  Just sayin’… :).

To photographers: I like to always offer a tidbit of inspiration or photography geekiness to my posts.  Since I can’t really think of too much to share here, I’ll share how to create the first photograph you see.  Here I metered on the sky outside the windows and used no flash.  As the sky wasn’t quite blue enough for my taste and I could still see too much detail, I photographed this a second time metering for the sky, then shooting one stop darker than that.  Whenever I take this type of photograph I always like to get some with light as well, in which case I would use my flash bounced off of a wall or ceiling.

I will now leave you with the pictures as I go to watch some House episodes…
